Local to Global: How Diaspora Communities Mobilise Climate Action

Diaspora communities across the UK play a vital role in connecting local organising and community engagement with the global struggle of tackling climate change. Often most vocal in highlighting the disproportionate climate impacts experienced by the Global South, whilst navigating a national context where both anti-migrant narratives and climate ambitions are increasingly weaponised.

Join our upcoming webinar aiming to explore how the diaspora are leveraging their deep connections to people and place, their expertise and skills - from policy design to arts, from financial systems to indigenous knowledge - to build climate resilience and justice in their local communities and countries of heritage.

Against the backdrop of Belém’s COP30, where the slogan "Global Mutirão" has been celebrated (originally from the Tupi-Guarani language), meaning ‘collective efforts’ and encouraging action worldwide - we will delve into how diaspora communities are in a unique position to tap into deep values, concerns and passions to support communities both locally and globally, from Somalia to Bangladesh to Sierra Leone.

Join us on Wednesday 26th November (12:00-13:00 GMT, Zoom) to hear from an excellent line-up, including:

  • Dhaqan Collective:

A feminist art collective of Somali women, centering the voices of womxn and elders in the community, and privileging co-creation and collaboration

  • The People’s Ark:

A community-centred green skills network, supporting people across the UK in developing green technical skills to address the growing green skills shortage

  • Pushpa:

A diaspora community funding economic growth in Bangladesh, and connecting the diaspora with projects that create jobs, support communities, and protect our planet

Chaired by Fahmida Miah, programme manager of Climate Outreach’s migration programme and co-running Bangladeshi Diaspora Climate Action (BDCA), a network of Bangladeshis across the UK, utilising their connections and expertise to raise awareness of climate impacts within the diaspora and support climate initiatives in Bangladesh.
